A skid steer that fits neatly on a trailer is one thing. A 75,000-pound excavator with a wide boom, low ground clearance, and a jobsite deadline is another. Knowing how to ship construction equipment starts with getting the details right before a truck is dispatched. The machine, route, loading location, trailer type, permits, and timing all affect the final plan and price.
Construction equipment transport is not a one-size-fits-all service. A compact track loader may move on a hotshot trailer with ramps, while a large dozer may need a lowboy, step-deck, or removable gooseneck trailer. The safest, most cost-conscious move is the one that matches the equipment to the proper carrier setup from the start.
Start With Accurate Equipment Details
A carrier cannot select the right trailer or determine permit needs from a machine name alone. Before requesting a quote, gather the year, make, model, and exact operating weight. Include overall length, width, height, and ground clearance when available. If attachments are traveling with the machine, list those separately.
Attachments can change the transport plan more than people expect. A bucket, auger, blade, grapple, cab guard, or counterweight may increase width, add weight, or require separate securement. In some cases, removing an attachment makes the load lower, narrower, and easier to permit. In others, it is more practical to ship the attachment on the same trailer if space and weight allow.

A hotshot trailer with ramps can be a good fit for smaller equipment such as mini excavators, skid steers, compact rollers, and small tractors. It can be an efficient choice for shorter or time-sensitive moves, but it has weight and deck-height limits.
A flatbed works well for equipment that can be loaded by ramp or forklift and stays within legal height limits. Step-decks provide a lower deck height for taller machinery, helping avoid unnecessary height issues. For heavy, tall, or low-clearance equipment, a lowboy or RGN trailer is often the better choice. An RGN, or removable gooseneck trailer, allows many machines to be driven directly onto the deck from the front, which is useful when ramps are not practical.
Enclosed transport is generally reserved for smaller, high-value equipment, specialized tools, or machines requiring added weather protection. It costs more than open hauling, so it makes the most sense when protection and security outweigh the added expense.
Know When Oversize Permits Are Required
Equipment that exceeds standard legal dimensions may require oversize permits. Limits vary by state and route, but width, height, length, and gross weight all matter. A machine can be legal in one state and require permits in the next, especially on a multi-state move.
Permit requirements may affect pickup dates, travel hours, route selection, and delivery timing. Some oversized loads cannot travel at night, on holidays, or during periods of heavy traffic. Certain loads may also need pilot cars or escorts. Those details are not a reason to delay shipping. They are a reason to plan ahead.
Never assume a carrier can simply take the fastest highway route. Low bridges, weight-restricted roads, construction zones, and local restrictions may require a different path. Prepare the Machine Before Pickup
A well-prepared machine loads faster and reduces avoidable problems at pickup. Remove loose tools, personal items, and unsecured accessories from the cab, compartments, and exterior. Retract booms or arms according to the manufacturer’s transport position, lower attachments, and secure doors, windows, and panels.
Check for active leaks before the carrier arrives. Minor seepage should be disclosed so the driver can plan accordingly, while significant hydraulic, fuel, or oil leaks may need repair before transport. Most carriers also prefer equipment with a manageable fuel level. Enough fuel to load and unload is necessary, but a full tank adds weight and can create unnecessary risk.
If the equipment does not run, say so during the quote process. Inoperable machinery can still be transported, but it may require a winch, crane, forklift, loading assistance, or a different trailer configuration. Waiting until pickup to mention that a machine will not start can lead to delays and extra charges.
Take dated photos and note the hour meter before release. This simple step creates a useful record for both the owner and carrier. Keep keys, remotes, and operating instructions available, and make sure the driver knows about any special startup procedures or parking brake requirements.
Plan the Pickup and Delivery Locations
Jobsite access is often the practical challenge, not the interstate travel. A full-size tractor-trailer needs room to enter, turn, position, load, and exit safely. Narrow gates, soft ground, overhead wires, parked vehicles, and tight residential streets can make direct pickup impossible.
Walk the pickup and delivery sites before scheduling. Confirm that the ground is firm enough for a loaded truck and that there is sufficient clearance around the machine. If access is limited, arrange a nearby equipment yard, commercial lot, staging area, or another safe meeting point. A short relocation of the machine can prevent hours of delay for a specialized carrier.
The person meeting the driver should be authorized to release or receive the equipment and able to inspect it. They should also have a working phone number for day-of coordination. Construction schedules change quickly, so accurate contact information matters as much as the physical address.
Understand What Drives Equipment Shipping Cost
There is no single rate for shipping construction equipment. Distance is a major factor, but weight, dimensions, trailer type, route complexity, fuel costs, permits, carrier availability, and pickup flexibility all influence pricing.
A compact excavator moving between nearby cities may have a straightforward rate. A wide crawler dozer moving across several states may require permits, a specialized trailer, route planning, and additional lead time. Shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands also involves port coordination and a different timeline than a continental U.S. move.
The lowest quote is not always the lowest final cost. A quote that does not account for an oversized load, an inoperable machine, difficult site access, or required loading help can change later. That said, urgent moves happen. A breakdown replacement, auction purchase, weather event, or sudden project change may require faster action. Flexible pickup windows can help improve carrier availability, while a firm delivery appointment may require more planning and a higher rate. Be clear about which date matters most: pickup, delivery, or both.
